This is a reading course in which we will read this popular book about cosmology. The book was written in 1988 and updated in 1996. Since then the discoveries in cosmology which the book covers have advanced significantly. The book, however, discusses very basic concepts which have not changed but may require help in understanding. The course will be a discussion of the content of the book with help from the instructor who will supplement the reading with current progress in the field of cosmology. Topics included aspects of special and general relativity, quantum mechanics , the origin of the universe, the Big Bang, black holes, elementary particles, and the unification of the forces of nature.
