March 23 —  April 27 (5 sessions, no class Mar. 30)

Under King Edgar the Peaceable (d. 975), England was politically, culturally, and economically strong. However, in the late 10th century, the Vikings attacked and soon England fell to the Danes. The English royal house was able to resume power for a time, but after the death of Edward the Confessor, Duke William of Normandy led another conquest of England. In this course, we will study the art, literature, and religion, and the court intrigues, murders, and conquests of this tumultuous era.
