This course will cover the evolution of lumbering in Eastern Canada while highlighting the Davison lumbering empire, a business which affected Nova Scotia industrially, politically, economically and socially.
Session 1: The first post-european lumbering operations and the French influence, the New England settlements, Samuel Mack and the early beginnings of the E.D. Davison lumbering empire.
Session 2: Davison's move to the LaHave and the resulting growth of the lumbering business. The Davison empire expands to include mining and pulp manufacturing.
Session 3: The American takeover of the Davison family business in 1903 which turned into an industrial machine of legendary proportions.

Philip Spencer
Philip has had a life long interest in the Davison Lumber Co due to his grandfather's involvement in the firm and has been conducting extensive research into this company for almost 20 years. A former automotive technician, Philip is now a computer scientist at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography.
