The goal of this course is to teach watercolor techniques that can be used by new or experienced watercolor painters.
The cost of materials will be kept low (under $75) by using only three brushes, three primary colors, small sizes of paper, a sketch book, two pencils, and a kneeded eraser. Students can provide their own household items such as styrofoam plates, toothbrushes, kitchen wrap, and a spray bottle.
CLASSES
1. Introduction
Explanation: materials and paint application methods
Workshop: breaking down a large watercolor sheet, setting up a transparent colour palette, painting single colour washes on the three different types of paper using different sizes of brushes, different wetnesses, pouring, spattering, charging.
2. Colours
Explanation: primary colours and mixing
Workshop: setting up palette with transparent colours, mixing greens, blacks, browns, and greys, painting 3 small studies (an apple, an orange, a banana) using the techniques learned in the first and second class explanations to understand the power of complimentary colours
3. Refining a dried painting
Explanation: saving and recovering whites, shadow, textures, and composition
Workshop: refining the 3 studies from the previous class, paint will be lifted to reveal white areas, a center of interest will be created, texture and new washes will be applied, and the studies will be used to develop light and shadow, and elements of composition
4. How to paint from a photo
Explanation: using a photo as a starting point for a painting
Workshop: using a photo handed out in class, a thumbnail sketch will be created, evaluated for its composition, transferred to watercolor paper, and executed as a watercolour painting
5. Painting
Explanation: as individually required
Workshop: using a photo of the student's choice, a thumbnail sketch will be created, evaluated for its composition, transferred to watercolor paper, and executed as a watercolour painting
